Geography

Intent

At Murdishaw West, we aim to provide a relevant, engaging Geography curriculum that broadens children’s horizons by exposing them to the world beyond Murdishaw. We believe that Geography helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. We aim to stimulate pupil’s interest in the world around them and to foster a sense of place, space and wonder at the world around them. We want our children to care about the world in which we all live and to develop an informed concern for the quality of the environment. We aim to enhance the children’s sense of responsibility for the care of the earth and its people. We aim to develop in children the skills of enquiry, investigation, analysis, evaluation and presentation.

Implementation

The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum supports children’s understanding of geography, people and communities, the natural world through the planning and teaching of ‘Understanding the World’. Geography is effectively taught through their wider curriculum lessons and through their enhanced learning provision and environment. Geography is taught in topic blocks across years one to six. Children will be taught using an enquiry approach that encourages them to ask questions and seek answers and understanding. Each topic will begin with an opportunity for the children to show what they already know and form their own questions. At the end of a topic the children will be given the opportunity to show what they have learnt. Across the school children will be given regular opportunities to review and retrieve previous learning.

Impact

Through studying the Geography of Britain and the wider world children will gain a greater understanding of our world and their place within it. Our curriculum enables the children to see how the Geography of our world influences the manner in which we live our lives today. Children will develop their understanding of the British Values of Tolerance and Respect through learning about different cultures and their life styles. This will be evidenced through the pupils work and pupil voice.
